Year founded: 1980
Number of Residents: 36

Our program is demanding, but the atmosphere is one of teamwork and camaraderie that supports an environment of respect and the growth of its residents. Many of our staff have completed additional fellowship training in Wilderness Medicine, Ultrasound, Pediatrics, Critical Care, and Faculty Development, and together they possess vast operational experiences. Many staff have established records of excellence in teaching, administration, and research, with abundant opportunities for resident involvement in these areas. Our graduates are prepared to pass the ABEM certifying exams, practice Emergency Medicine anywhere in the world, and assume leadership positions in the Army and beyond.

What training opportunities make your program unique?

Madigan is a Level II Trauma Center and accepts civilian patients through its affiliation with the Tacoma Trauma Trust. Located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, our patients encompass a diverse population, with a full spectrum of medical, surgical, obstetric, and pediatric illness. JBLM is home to I Corps, 7th Infantry Division, 1st Special Forces Group, 75th Ranger Regiment, 160th SOAR, and several Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachments (FRSD’s), which provides numerous resident opportunities for those interested in operational medicine.

Beyond the MAMC ED, we have over a dozen outside rotations which include: University of Washington (ED, MICU), Harborview Medical Center-Level 1 Trauma Center (Trauma ED x2, Neuro ICU), Legacy Emmanuel-Portland-Level 1 Trauma Center (Trauma ED), Mary Bridge Children's Hospital (ED), St Joseph medical Center (CCU), Sacred Heart-Spokane (PICU), Toxicology (Washington Poison Control), EMS (Airlift Northwest Ride-Along), and numerous community ED rotations as EM-2 and EM-3 residents.

Fun Things to Do:

Seattle and Tacoma host a wealth of concerts, museums, professional sports teams, and fine dining restaurants. Washington is home to numerous parks including Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, and North Cascades National Park where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, camping, and skiing. It is a short drive to the Puget Sound, Pacific Ocean, or local lakes and rivers, where many enjoy water sports, boating, or fishing. For a weekend away, the San Juan Islands, Victoria and Vancouver Canada, and Portland are all within reach and are essential destinations for Washington residents.
