Please join us on Monday, 27 July at 1930 EST for an interactive discussion on one of the most significant milestones in an emergency physician’s career: the transition from residency to independent practice as both an Emergency Medicine attending and a military officer. Dr. Karen Norling and Dr. Dean Cataldo will share their unique perspectives on navigating this transition after completing different residency pathways and beginning their careers in very different military practice environments. Dr. Norling, a graduate of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, currently serves as the Emergency Department Department Head, EMS Medical Director, and Chair of the Medical Executive Committee at U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay. Dr. Cataldo completed residency at the UMass Chan–Baystate Emergency Medicine Residency and is currently serving as a staff emergency physician with Bravo Company, 2nd Medical Battalion. Together, they will discuss lessons learned during their first year as attendings, selecting their first billet, balancing clinical and leadership responsibilities, and the advice they wish they had received before graduating residency. This session is designed primarily for senior Emergency Medicine residents—including NADDS, FTOS, and FTIS residents—but is open to all EM residents and fourth-year medical students interested in military Emergency Medicine. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion, making this an excellent chance to gain practical insight from officers who have recently navigated the transition you will soon face.
