Tips and Tricks for Ultrasound Training in the Austere Environment

(Previously published for ACEP's EM Ultrasound Section). Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has led to significant changes to patient care and outcomes in hospital environments and has since spread to pre-hospital and austere environments. Over the past several decades, increased portability of ultrasound has allowed for its use and demonstrated efficacy in numerous resource-limited settings, including low and middle-income countries, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and natural disasters. The introduction of handheld devices has further increased the portability and ease of use of POCUS with reliable diagnostic accuracy. The intent of this document is to provide helpful advice to providers who will or are operating in austere environments in training others in POCUS.

Longer Times, More Drones: The Future of Army EM

Since the Secretary of Defense James Mattis published the 2018 National Defense Strategy, the Army has shifted from a focus on counterinsurgency operations to actions against near-peer forces (1). The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and ongoing tensions in various parts of the world have only corroborated this; more and more, Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO) appear to be the inevitable future of warfare (2).

Building Mission-Ready EM Physicians: Highlights from the 2025 GSACEP Government Services Symposium

The 2025 Government Services Symposium (GSS25), held April 10–12 at the Hilton Palacio del Rio in San Antonio, brought together military and federal emergency physicians from across the country for three powerful days of education, collaboration, and camaraderie. Set along the Riverwalk and within view of the Alamo, this year’s event reflected the strength, adaptability, and forward momentum of our specialty within the Military Health System.

Scrubs to Suits: Leadership & Advocacy Conference

As an active-duty Air Force physician, I had no idea the opportunities and vast resources that were available to me. It was as simple as Dr. Fontenette asking “Do you want to go to Washington D.C.?” I was so nervous about going to the Nation’s Capital and speaking with lawmakers. I didn’t even know what I was going to wear. It turns out, that’s what the first two days of the conference are for. The conference brings in experts from all backgrounds - doctors, lawyers, data analysts, and Hill staffers, and gave attendees from medical students to attendings a platform to present their research.

EM Consultant Spotlight: Army

What is the Army EM Consultant you might ask? By doctrine, I serve as the subject matter expert for all things EM for the Army, advocate for specialty concerns, define training requirements, determine distribution of positions, and provide mentorship for our population. The reality is no person can know and do all of the things required by themselves, so really I am but one member of team of senior Army EM leaders that I have surrounded myself with to help to shape and guide the direction of EM in the military.
