GSS 26 Conference Recap

Annually, emergency physicians serving in military and federal roles convene for the Government Services Symposium (GSS)- three days of learning, networking, and socializing with fellow physicians, residents, and medical students. GSS26 was held in Norfolk, VA, home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, which is a major training hospital for Navy emergency physicians. Though hosted by a naval city, the symposium welcomed military physicians of all branches and federal agencies, including GSACEP members from all over the country and internationally. Throughout the week, attendees were reminded of the necessity of preparedness, especially with rapidly escalating global tensions.

ACEP Leadership and Advocacy Conference Recap

This year, GSACEP was well represented at the ACEP LAC conference with 6 primary members including 3 board members and 2 LAC Scholarship recipients in attendance. It was a new experience for several members and provided a valuable opportunity to network and collaborate on pressing issues in Emergency Medicine.

Career Development Grant Reflection

With the GSCACEP Career Development Grant, I attended RE-ANIMATE 11, a two-day immersive conference centered on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulation. While the conference delved into ECMO physiology, the focus was to develop the hands-on skills needed for emergent ECMO cannulations, including performing cannulation for ECPR, and to learn how to train a team, hospital, and healthcare system to effectively implement an ECPR program.

Tips and Tricks for Ultrasound Training in the Austere Environment

(Previously published for ACEP's EM Ultrasound Section). Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has led to significant changes to patient care and outcomes in hospital environments and has since spread to pre-hospital and austere environments. Over the past several decades, increased portability of ultrasound has allowed for its use and demonstrated efficacy in numerous resource-limited settings, including low and middle-income countries, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and natural disasters. The introduction of handheld devices has further increased the portability and ease of use of POCUS with reliable diagnostic accuracy. The intent of this document is to provide helpful advice to providers who will or are operating in austere environments in training others in POCUS.
