GSACEP Presidential Address

Lt Col (ret) Roderick Fontenette, MD, FACEP

After 21 years of active-duty service, I finally decided to hang up the uniform and transition into the civilian sector. After years of deployments, Humanitarian Missions, Computer Based Trainings (CBT’s), and numerous short notice taskings, I have officially retired and have decided to remain in Northern California. Now that I’ve been out just over five months and have had time to look back and reflect, what I’ve realized is that being a member of this chapter gives me a way to stay connected and, in some way, still contribute to the mission. What makes our chapter unique and different from state chapters is that we are not bound by geography but by mission. Our members are spread all over the world and this chapter provides a way for us to all come together, share experiences, learn, and most importantly, relax and have fun!

Cpt Jacob Altholz, MD

From the residents’ perspective, ACEP Council often serves as our first glimpse of organized medicine and how higher-level decisions are made within the college. The GSACEP delegation had a resident representative this year, Micaela LaRose, MD. Hailing from San Antonio Military Medical Center, Dr. LaRose was credentialed to vote on the floor. In addition to Dr. LaRose, there were also three active-duty members of the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association serving as councilors. While residents are relatively new to the profession compared with their attending counterparts, their fresh perspective and proximity to training offers a valuable perspective on different topics that the Council debates.

CDR Sean Stuart, DO, FACEP

CDR Sean Stuart currently serves as academic faculty at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth where he also served as the medical director during their COVID-19 response. He is deeply involved in research and is currently head of the GSS Planning Committee and Research Forum Faculty Chair. Here we present two of his publications that explore novel healthcare approaches to the care of COVID-19 patients. The first uses thromboelastography to track hypercoagulability in COVID-19 patients and the second looks at using a drive-through healthcare delivery system to improve patient care.

Interview with MAJ (ret) Kenneth Frumkin

GSACEP commissioned this interview with Dr. Kenneth Frumkin as part of its History of Military Emergency Medicine project. Dr. Frumkin currently practices Emergency Medicine as a civilian at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth. He served as residency director and chief of Emergency Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center between 1983 and 1984. Dr. Frumkin brings a unique perspective, having trained some of the first Emergency Medicine residents early in his career, and continuing to train the next generation of military emergency physicians in his current job. During his career, Dr. Frumkin served 11 years on active duty in the Army, and was honorably discharged as a major in 1986.
